Drape & Feel
A crisp, breathable classic. This plain weave cotton possesses a smooth, flat surface that feels cool against the skin. It holds a sharp crease beautifully when pressed, offering gentle, architectural structure rather than a fluid, liquid drape. It is lightweight enough for summer shirting but possesses enough body to hold the shape of an A-line skirt or structured bodice.
The Dressmaker’s Notes
This is arguably the most reliable fabric in a dressmaker’s stash. Because it has zero stretch and a stable grainline, it will not slip or warp under your sewing machine foot, making it the perfect choice for precise details like collars, cuffs, and button plackets. While it is incredibly easy to sew, a blunt needle can occasionally push the tightly woven threads aside, causing a visible ‘run’. Always start your project with a fresh Universal 70/10 or 80/12 machine needle. For garment sewing, lining is recommended for fitted skirts or dresses to ensure complete opacity in bright sunlight.
Recommended Applications
Machine wash at 30°C or 40°C with similar colors. As with all natural, untreated cottons, we strongly recommend pre-washing your yardage before cutting to allow for a standard 3-5% shrinkage. Tumble dry on a low heat setting, but for the most pristine finish, remove from the dryer while slightly damp and press with a hot iron and plenty of steam.
